"SECURE CANADA 2008", OR “SICKO CAN”

– OTTAWA HOSTS WARMONGERS TRADE SHOW

by Iako’ha:kowa of Sharbot Lake, Haudenosaunee Territory and MNN Staff.
MNN. August 4, 2008. War is illegal. Did Canada forget? In 1989 there was a ban on military trade shows in Ottawa. Now the industry is going to sneak one on us. War or fascism is preceded by techniques to PSYCHE out the opponents or victims to scare everybody into hopeless despair. One way is to parade military and despotic hardware in front of the public to get us use to it. Hitler, Mouselini and Stalin all used this tactic. TV ads are recruiting youth into the military; video war games extol death and destruction; air shows mesmerize children and glamorize bomber planes that kill people; and military trade shows promote the war industry. Soon only innocent human beings will be killed. It’s called “low level warfare” designed to attack the unarmed people. This "Pukey Canada 2008" trade show for war makers is the height of absurdity, at Ottawa's Lansdowne Park on September 30 to October 1st. It’s about cutting edge "remote warfare" to help their military and police agents of repression in their quest for global domination and control. There they can buy all the lethal trinkets they need to kill, control or maim us from afar without getting their fingers dirty. Exhibitors will show off toxic toys for domestic control such as uav's [remote unmanned flying objects that shoot s..t at people] and all manner of satellite spy ware. This “Nauseating Canada” trade show will feature C4ISR “gizmos” to "command, control, communications and computer based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance". They hope to have domestic repression of Turtle Island in place by 2010. As if! Watch out, unarmed protestors! You could be used as practice targets of these newly equipped gunslingers. 20 of the 58 exhibitors are members of the “Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries” CADSI known as the “merchants of death”. They are Boeing Aerospace, Canadian Center for Unmanned Vehicle Systems, Canadian Defence Review, Commissionaires, Dessau, ESRI Canada, Frontline Robotics, Green Hills Software, Harris Canada, Inc., Meggitt, M/ACOM Tyco Electronics, and Technopole Defense. [Excuse us, since when has Canada been attacked? Where are the imaginary enemies? They are the enemies of the people.] L3 Mas, CAE and General Dynamics Canada are on the CADSI board. L3 Communications Holdings Inc. is on the "list of 38 companies that the Canadian Securities and Exchange Commission fingered as involved in 'put options' profiteering on 911". Who are these “Wannabee Big Shots”?: Frontlines Robotics, [CADSI member] based in Ottawa, has offices in Israel. Jeremy “Jiminy Jim” James is the president and ceo. They work with InRob Tech that specializes in military robots and remote controlled vehicles. They can kill men, women and babies without getting a scratch. Their "perimeter security" are robots that guard anything from nuclear reactors to military bases. GreenHills Software, a US outfit, has offices in Ottawa. They work with CAE, IBM, Lockheed Martin (F35 Joint strike fighters), Toshiba, Raytheon, Toyota (Prius), Ford (Lincoln Aviator), Northrop Grunman (Airbus 380), Nera Wireless Networking and many other companies. They'll be at the “RealTime & Embedded Computing [How-to-Slaughter] Conferences” in Ottawa and Montreal at the end of August. Technopôle Defence & Security, [CADSI member] based in Quebec City is a professional business network. They set up trade shows and bring together butchers like "technology integrators, producers and suppliers, private and public research and development centres, universities and other educational institutions and government departments and agencies" that are researching more ways to kill people. Technopole's members include SNC, TEC, DRDC, General Dynamics Canada, Universite Laval, CGI, Thales Systems, and lesser known companies like Telops, Analytical Systems, Opto Security, Black Coral, Creaform, RoboMotio, Gentec and Cargolution. Canada Economic Development is their main partner and funder. Why aren’t there any trade shows on how to defend ourselves from these homicidal maniacs? Black Coral of Ottawa "specializes in map enabled technologies" to help their “hired guns”, like police and military agencies, during "emergencies" and "terrorist events" [which they’ll create!]. If they’re so smart, why did the Winnipeg cops shoot and kill an Indigenous man who had a cell phone in his hand and not a knife? Black Coral's advisory board consists of three men with long police or military careers. Phil "He aint my Brother" Murray, former Commissioner of the RCMP, was a member of the Research Advisory Committee on the “Ipperwash Commission of Inquiry into Aboriginal Relations with the Police”. It carefully studied the OPP murder of Indigenous demonstrator, Dudley George, on how to get away with it without being questioned. Creepy Phil seems to have a sinister interest in Indigenous people. Phil is a Member of the Advisory Panel for the “Cornwall Commission of Inquiry into Historical Sexual Abuse” by police, church, city, judiciary, Childrens Aid and other public bodies. Jim "Freaky James" Fraser is retired from the US military where he trained police assassins on SWAT tactics. He is a member of the Fort Benning Georgia “Officer Candidate Hall of Fame”. Fort Benning is famous for the “School of the Americas” (SOA) that sets up “death squads” in third world regimes. They teach advanced brutality and torture. Jim’s specialty is creating “terrorist events”. These insane guys create dire situations so they can use their evil toys. Bob "Sleeps-Hanging-Upside-Down-from-a-Technopole" Fischer, a past President of CADSI, was in the Canadian military before going to General Dynamics Canada. He became Vice President Business Development and Government Relations. He is now the current Chairman of the “Canadian NATO Industry Advisory Group”. The “St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency” of New York State is boogying up to the Sec Can trade show. They say they "act as a liaison between your firm, local municipalities, financing sources and governmental agencies". In other words, they’re going there to party with “war-like minds”! These sadistic ghouls could be offering a space in NYS to make tools of repression? St. Lawrence County is near the Mohawk community of Akwesasne. These perverts want to boost the economy with a military buildup. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) Canada Chapter will be promoting their own “show within a show”, sponsored by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. Imstat president, Tom Last, could run the UAV's by remote control from their lab in Carleton Place just outside of Ottawa. Well Known Big Shots/Bigots: CAE of Montreal has a current annual revenue of over $1.2B [which can kill an awful lot of people]. They get a lot of research and development money, a term for “corporate welfare” or money from the government. They specialize in civil and military simulations for full flight training, such as for the C130 Hercules and many fighter planes plus helicopters, as well as commercial jets. CAE will hold a special shareholders meeting on August 13 at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montreal. They have 2 boards, one in Canada and another in the US, made up mostly of retired military. [Geez! They should be stopping these terrorists from coming over the border instead of inviting them!] Marc "Wants to Kill Other People's Children" Parent, previously of Bombardier, is on both CAE boards. He’s the Group President, Simulation Products and Military Training & Services. Morbid Marc is on the board at CADSI and the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC). Another noxious CAE director is James "who-blows-out-missile-exhaust” Hankinson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ontario Power Generation Inc. CAE announced at a July 8 air show in the UK that it had $128 million in new contracts. They’re making a flight simulator for Bombardier's Montreal training center. Lurking In The Shadows: Oxford educated David "Living-High-on-the-Hog" Luxton thinks he’s a major driving force in Ottawa's make-war industry. [see photo at flickr.com]. He was in the Canadian military. He’s been a bureaucrat, advisor in the Privy Council where Canada 's laws are drafted, Director and Registrar of Copyright and Industrial Design for Canada. ”Warped” Luxton is founding president and ceo at Allen Vanguard, an Ottawa based electronics manufacturer of terrorist gadgetry for their mercenaries. They used to test their bomb suits, robots and other CBRNE [chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive] stuff at MREL's facility near Sharbot Lake where they loved simulating mangled corpses. Then MREL was shut down by protesters in the summer of 2007. Allen Vanguard has plants in Pembroke Ontario and other places. Ken Deane, the OPP sniper who shot and killed Dudley George, was hired by Allen Vanguard as a security guard after being kicked out of the OPP. He died in a car "accident" on the 401 just before he was to testify at the Ipperwash Inquiry. ”Canker Sore” Luxton is also founding president of Def [Death] Sec, an Ottawa investment company for the military industry. Luxton and Ken Murray founded Simunition which specializes in police and military "reality training" with "projectiles" like paint ball. They teach cops how to overcome their fears and shoot to kill. War Monger Luxton is on the board of CADSI. Though his companies may not be exhibiting at the Sec Can trade show, he'll be hanging around looking over the projectiles. Luxton supports the elite cartel that doesn’t like Indigenous and people of color, want to plunder the Earth's riches and set up a global government. Like his buddies, he's locked into a “terrorkillhigh” adrenalin mindset, who needs to get it off regularly. That’s no excuse for his inhumanity. Someone should get him into “war monger rehab” in a remote Indigenous community quick! Look out for shadowy Frenchman, Marcel "Mortal-Liquidateur" Picciotto, president and ceo of Thales Systems Canada based in Montreal with offices in Ottawa. [CADSI board for 3 years]. Thales, a French company had sales of $12 billion in 2007. They specialize in C4ISR for armies, navies, air forces and anybody with the cash. Thales have just renewed their deal with NATO to expand communications and logistics in Afghanistan. [Whoa! Who wants to keep this war going and why? It’s big bucks for someone! High taxes for the rest! Thales makes flight control systems for Bombardier and other plane builders and control systems for railways. Just in time for the Olympics, Beijing Mass Transit Railway Operation Corp. has launched its Thales contact-less fare collection system. [Are non-payers disintegrated?] JeanMarc Gardin, Vice President and Managing Director of Thales remarked, "China represents a huge opportunity for us..." These incestuous companies work together on ‘genocide’ projects. These “glorified gunmen” fancy themselves to be an elite bunch. They use their sadistic delusions to siphon a lot of money from the public purse. Indigenous people constantly resist the theft of our freedom. We are defenders of the land and the Earth's riches. We stand in the way of big military plans for the St. Lawrence/Great Lakes region. We all have minds to think and untapped abilities and creativity that can resolve overwhelming dilemmas. No one person has ALL the answers. Each can contribute a piece to the puzzle. Our sense of isolation and alienation in Western society is designed to make us feel alone and vulnerable. There is much strength in our ties to the Earth and each other. We need to work together to stop these ruthlessly demented demons. Kahnesetake Saturday Night ?

Two Sûreté du Québec police vehicles were damaged during an incident sparked by a traffic stop involving a patrol vehicle around midnight. There are reports that police cars ended up being pursued by other vehicles and were run off the road.

(Jus' like Boss Hog and Roscoe! hahahaaha)

Between 12 and 15 people blocked Highway 344 west of Montreal by dragging trees onto the road.

Police spokesman Gregory Gomez del Prado said protesters also set fire to a tree trunk that was on the road and barricaded two other entrances to Kanesatake.

ahahahaha OK I have a slight empathy with the adventures of The General Lee, and this is just like an episode.
Now Bo and LukeDuke ... alla you guys ... doncha think maybe you could take those barricades down now, and put the fires out before ya leave too, eh? Ya had your fun, boys. Boss Prado's plenty ps'd and now we got two darn police cars ta fix, ya see ... and no pay for those ones! Taaaarrrrnation! Boys!
ahahhahahahaha Saturday night ... more ... Mohawks look for answers after violent weekend near Oka Posted 14 hours ago After a weekend of confrontation with Quebec police, Mohawk leaders near Oka moved on Monday to condemn violence in their community. On Friday, two police cruisers were rammed in Kanesatake and a highway was cut off by a barricade of burning tree stumps.
There are reports that police cars ended up being pursued by other vehicles and were run off the road. Straightening them curves ... Flattenin them hills ... Someday the mountain might get em, but the law never will. (oops scuse burst into song moment ahhahahahahaaha)
"The Mohawk council of Kanesatake does not support or condone the events that happened," Kanesatake territory Grand Chief Paul Nicholas told reporters Monday after a marathon band-council meeting. (... of course) Residents of the community that was at the centre of the 1990 Oka crisis have called an emergency community meeting for Thursday. "We're looking for solutions to some of the events that happened this past weekend," Nicholas said. Quebec provincial police are releasing few details about the weekend incidents, citing their ongoing investigation. They said a speeding car was stopped on Kanesatake territory Friday night. An officer used pepper spray to arrest the teenage driver and at least one passenger. A couple of hours later, trucks smashed into two police cruisers on a road outside Kanesatake, police said. The vehicles were damaged but the four officers escaped injury. (of course ... otherwise I wouldn't be making fun.) Spokesman Sgt. Michel Brunet said investigators are trying to determine if the incidents are linked. (of course not! it's just Saturday night!) "We will see in the next few days if there will (be) charges against them," Brunet said. Later on Friday night, about a dozen people dragged logs across Highway 344 near Oka, west of Montreal, and torched them. Police asked local band council members to convince the individuals to abandon the barricade. The barricade was abandoned Saturday morning and Quebec transport officials removed the debris by 10 a. m. Copyright © 2008 Brantford Expositor

Kahentinetha Horn, Katenies (Mohawk Nation Elders) attacked at the border - Cornwall If Canadians are so damned sorry about the abuse of Native people, why is this still happening? Why do people remain silent when Mohawk elders and grandmothers are attacked like this? *** A few months ago, Julian Fantino put out the word, warning Kahentinetha not to set foot in Ontario or else. Kahentinetha Horn is well known in Canada as a former model, current publisher of MOHAWK NATION NEWS http://www.mohawknationnews.com, and an international Indigenous activist. She is currently in hospital, moved from Cornwall to Ottawa, after suffering a heart attack during her arrest with her daughter Katenies, during at a routine border crossing within the Akwesasne/Kahnesatake border community. Our prayers are with her. (Updates below.) ONE ELDER SAVED BY A HEART ATTACK - ANOTHER ELDER MISSING IN ACTION: MOHAWK GRANDMOTHERS ATTACKED AT CANADA-US BORDER CROSSING ON UNCEDED HAUDENOSAUNEE LAND by Iakoha’ko:wa of Sharbot Lake of Haudenosaunee Territory Monday, June 16, 2008 Mohawk Elder and Grandmother, Kahentinetha Horn suffered a heart attack, Saturday, June 14, 2008 during a vicious, unprovoked assault by OPP and border agents at Cornwall, in Akwesasne community. She had been beaten and handcuffed when she collapsed. Earlier when she was pulled over, Kahentinetha immediately contacted her brother, a lawyer, on her cellphone. The entire incident was being filmed as her brother rushed to the scene just in time to call an ambulance for her. Meanwhile, Elder and Grandmother Katenies of Akwesasne was beaten and taken prisoner to an as yet undisclosed location. We are very concerned about her safety. We demand to know of her whereabouts and that she be released immediately. A few months ago, Julian Fantino put out the word, warning Kahentinetha not to set foot in Ontario or else... She is the publisher of MNN and regular internet reports that are very critical of police and government actions toward Indigenous people. Her articles often clearly state the legalities/realities of the situation that Canada is a corporation plundering unceded Turtle Island. The land and resources belong to the Ongwehoneh people. Canada's huge debt to us will bankrupt them forever. The other day, while Stephen Harper was making a public apology to Indigenous for the crimes of the residential schools, he was also preparing to send the army in at 6 nations. Brantford city mayor has requested it, stating his city police cannot handle another "Mohawk uprising", in other words, peaceful protests against housing development where non resident, nonNatives attack the protesters while the police watch. The Ontario Conservatives call for military intervention every day. On Saturday, border agents were pulling over every Native person. Kahentinetha and Katenies were traveling in Akwesasne in the course of their regular activities and were caught up in the dragnet. Did Fantino set up a trap for the two outspoken, Mohawk grandmothers? We suspect that Kahentinetha would have been killed at a secret location had she not had a heart attack and been taken to hospital. Immediately following this incident, many Mohawks and supporters started to gather at Akwesasne. Kahentinetha and Katenies' attackers want them to accept being Canadian or else they will kill them and anyone else who resists colonization. This low level warfare is playing out on the "border" between Canada and the US, an imaginary line drawn right through the Mohawk community of Akwesasne and through Haudenosaunee territory which is a vast area on BOTH sides of the Great Lakes. This Great Lakes area is also a proposed center for the NWO. Many military plans are underway including nuclear submarines in the Great Lakes and JTF2, Aerospace Warfare Center and NATO FOB (Forward Operating Base) at a new base being built at Trenton, near Tyendinaga Mohawk community. Tyendinaga was attacked by OPP/SWAT in April when Mohawks protested housing development there. If Canadians are so damned sorry about the abuse of Native people, why is this still happening? Why do people remain silent when Mohawk elders and grandmothers are attacked like this? We are under constant surveillance and threats and attacks while our land continues to be plundered and pillaged. Was this a failed assassination attempt ordered by Julian Fantino, commissioner of OPP and head of the biggest gang in the area? We must demand answers and get answers. This attempted genocide must cease. We will never give up. Call or write to politicians, media, action lists including international. Get the word out now!!! K..... will be speaking with Kevin Annett on live radio today at 4:30 pm Montreal time. Outrage is growing in Indian country. Who will be next in the roundups? There is no doubt that this incident 'an attempt to take a human life', of Kahentinetha Horn - makes the false apology given by the Harper government to Native peoples for past tortures and maltreatment completely null and void. Token drugstore Indians like Phil Fontaine paraded around on TV to receive this apology are all on government payrolls. They represent and speak for no one but the government. It shows the hypocrisy insidiously embedded in the Harper government. This incident was not carried out by regular border patrol personnel. It was carried out by a team of professionals who are installed at this particular border crossing for the sole purpose of apprehending Miss Horn and doing away with her permanently. Behaviours and actions like this only come about when ordered and sanctioned by the highest levels of Harper's government and CSIS. This attempt on Miss Horn's life failed this time, but we are confident that Harper, CSIS and Fantino will continue in their efforts to silence Ms Horn forever. This attempt is just a variation of extraordinary rendition where one is whisked away to an undisclosed location, tortured and later found dead in a ditch somewhere. Tobacco war: More of Canada's crimes against humanity ?

Re: Tobacco faceoff looms - Contraband crackdown may spark native 'confrontation' John Ivison, National Post Published: Friday, May 09, 2008

Crown - Haudenosaunee Two Row Wampum Treaty of Alliance"Our doctrine is two boats travelling down the same river that never intersect and which live in peaceful co-existence but do not impose laws on one another," Chief Delisle said. John Ivison, National Post editorializes: Stirring stuff, but somewhat undermined by a closer look at the facts. The Mohawks of Kahnawake, Bay of Quinte, Akwesasne, the Six Nations and Tyendinaga might see themselves as sovereign jurisdictions, beholden to no one, but it doesn't stop them taking hundreds of millions of dollars from Canadian taxpayers.

Mr Ivison,

The payments to First Nations by our Canadian governments are required by our treaties with Indigenous Nations, treaties that allow us to live on their land. In partial return, we pay health, education and some other costs, a more palatable way for Canada to pay some of its debts, but always insufficiently. The treaties provide the only legal right we Canadians have to live in this land we call 'Canada', and they are also the laws that define our border with the U.S. Without the treaties of Indigenous Peoples with the Queen, Canada has no legal land mass, no sovereignty, no country. Too bad you didn't (have the nerve to?) share your opinion about the money with Mike Delisle. He would have easily set you straight about the money to their communities.
"Poof! You're a Canadian now!" (against your will) did not make it so. Sovereignty cannot be taken, only given.
Of course, after Confederation Canada's RCMP persistently dispersed traditional Indigenous governance at gunpoint, stole treaty wampums and removed from their homes and indoctrinated Indigenous children by the thousands, half of whom are still missing. Children and adults were sterilized, especially traditional leaders so their hereditary lines might not survive. However, none of that was legal by the international laws that govern relations among nations. In fact, internationally that is called genocide. And now Canada's legal misdeeds (aka crimes against humanity) are coming home to roost. Canada's genocide is well known by the UN International Centre for Justice, and by school children around the world, but Canadian teachers are not allowed to teach the truth. The payments to communities are at least one thing we did that was legal, though entirely insufficient and designed to keep them in extreme poverty. In my lifetime, I will see Canada acknowledge its crimes, acknowledge the sovereignty of Indigenous Nations, and live up to its agreements. You can count on that. I know it will be in spite of publications like the National Post that encourage and support Canada's past and present immorality and crimes and cover-ups to satisfy your corporate handlers. That is the kind of mind control of the public we will be attacking. Coming to your neighbourhood soon! Keep in mind ... Canada's economy is entirely dependent on the billions of dollars in natural resources stripped from traditional Indigenous lands everyday and shipped south, without consultation or agreement and with no revenues for their deliberately impoverished communities. In typical Canadian corporate arrogance, the shipping roads and railways often go right through traditional Indigenous land, again without any agreement or any compensation. The Indigenous Elders of today still remember Canada's guns that tried to destroy their communities, and they know their land rights and languages and traditions too. The Indigenous Youth of today are now experiencing Canada's guns for themselves. Together, the Youth and Elders are a powerful leadership alliance that now has Canada listening. If confrontation is the way Canada wants to go, we will hear the sound of blockades going up, and Canada's economy coming down. And there is absolutely nothing we can do about that legally. It is traditional Indigenous land. The Crown has a 'Duty to Consult' and make an agreement by Canadian Constitutional law. I have it on good authority that the tobacco war announced by Stockboy Day is just window dressing. As usual, they will make a big show of it, and then quietly drop all the charges before they have to go to court: It isn't about law, it's just harrassment. The reason resides in those same treaties: Canada has no legal authority in Haudenosaunee jurisdiction but Canada does not want that to come out in court, doesn't want Canadians to know. It's just a futile dance the feds do every once in a while: Tobacco sovereignty across the border and among Indigenous communities is a given. The Canadian courts can't touch the Jay Treaty. I deny and I will defy my country's right to send police to hold guns to heads of their young mothers and aim assault rifles at Indigenous Elders and children again, as Fantino's OPP just did at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The days of Canada rolling over the rights and the bodies and the babies of Indigenous people with brutal force are gone. Our governments, the Crown, have failed in their 'duty to consult and accommodate'. Indigenous Peoples are defending their land interests, legally. Nobody's shooting anybody here, ever again. Oka and Ipperwash will not be repeated. Our Canadian governments and police simply have to obey Canadian law. My Canada respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples: Love it or leave it! Honour the Queen's treaties and Canada's Constitution, Indigenous People's right to "A say in development and share in revenues" on their traditional Indigenous land. Obey the law. No more stupid guns. grannysaga Tobacco faceoff looms

Contraband crackdown may spark native 'confrontation'

John Ivison, National Post Published: Friday, May 09, 2008

Peter Redman/National PostNative groups consider cigarette manufacturing on reserves to be a legitimate enterprise under their legal system and warn against federal government intervention.

OTTAWA -Grand Chief Mike Delisle of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake expects "some kind of confrontation" if the Conservative government acts on its pledge to crack down on contraband tobacco, which has become big business on many native reserves.

The reason is that Mohawks on the reserve south of Montreal do not recognize Canadian law and insist the manufacture of cigarettes is legitimate under their legal system. If the feds think otherwise, they will have to negotiate with the Mohawk Council, Chief Delisle said. "We are a government and we expect to be dealt with on a nation to nation basis."

The Mohawks abide by the "two row wampum" treaty negotiated with the Dutch in the 1600s. This agreement is symbolized by a belt with two lines that run parallel but never meet.

"Our doctrine is two boats travelling down the same river that never intersect and which live in peaceful co-existence but do not impose laws on one another," Chief Delisle said.

Stirring stuff, but somewhat undermined by a closer look at the facts.

In the case of Kahnawake, which has a resident population of about 7,000, Ottawa shipped in $48-million in 2006-07 -- $7-million for schools, $7.3-million for infrastructure and housing, $5-million for social development and $4.2-million for health. The Mohawks of Akwesasne, the centre of the contraband tobacco industry, received $41.6-million in the same year.

This sits incongruously with Chief Delisle's contention that the Mohawks have never been citizens of Canada. "We consider Canada to be outside the realm of our confederacy," he said.

Incidents at Caledonia and Deseronto in Ontario have sparked fears of a repeat of the Oka Crisis of 1990, when the Kahnawake Mohawks blockaded the Mercier Bridge into Montreal. Chief Delisle said that, despite escalating tensions with the federal government, he did not think the situation was as grave as at the time of Oka. "We're still willing to talk. I don't think we're facing 1990 now, even though there is an expectation we'll say we'll block the bridge, which is not the case."

But he warned there will be a "problem" if the RCMP or Surete du Quebec raids the reserve to shut down tobacco manufacturers. "The community won't sit back and be run over.... There is likely to be some kind of confrontation -- I just hope it's not physical," he said.

There have been occasions in the recent past in which the local police force has cooperated with other law enforcement agencies. A joint operation in March netted 29 people and seized $3-million in cash, drugs and firearms. "There was a positive response here to make it into a safer place. This isn't a lawless society," he said.

Nevertheless, the federal government and the Mohawk Council have very different views of what passes for legitimate business. In addition to tobacco manufacture and distribution, Kahnawake plays host to 400 or so Internet sports betting sites that Ottawa considers illegal. In March, Rob Nicholson, the Minister of Justice, said he had asked officials to look at ways to "enforce the Criminal Code provisions ... with other measures" -- which most took to mean looking at how to restrict banks and credit card companies from conducting business with sites such as those based at Kahnawake.

Chuck Strahl, the Indian Affairs Minister, has portrayed relations between Ottawa and Canada's aboriginal communities as largely harmonious, marred only by "specific problems that are proving difficult" on a couple of reserves in Ontario. A short chat with Chief Delisle would disabuse him of that notion. Confrontation is coming.

Two Row Wampum Treaty

Two Row Wampum Treaty
"It is said that, each nation shall stay in their own vessels, and travel the river side by side. Further, it is said, that neither nation will try to steer the vessel of the other." This is a treaty among Indigenous Nations, and with Canada. This is the true nature of our relationships with Indigenous Nations of 'Kanata'.
